No Poo Do

My friend Paula, you remember the one that got me onto OCM a few months ago is at it again she’s go me trying the no poo method….

This is not with the no poo diet where you avoid eating No Poo Du Pudding from “Hong Kong Buffet”.

I’m so sorry I couldn’t help myself. 😀

What is the ” No Poo Method” you ask well, it is a method of washing hair without using shampoo.

Natural or organic shampoos are very expensive.  This all natural method only calls for Baking soda and vinegar,  sounds like a recipe for a science project, but baking soda and vinegar work really well as shampoo and conditioner .


Why Do No ‘Poo? Here is what I’ve learned so far,

Shampoo contains potentially harmful ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate and fragrance.

I  wash my hair with shampoo every day.   After a few months doing no ‘poo,  you should only have to wash it once or twice a week.

This means that not only do you save money, but you save water and the energy used to heat it for all of those longer showers, which translates into more vino for me 🙂

The Breaking In Period

You should know that almost everyone who switches to no ‘poo  method in the beginning does have a “breaking in period” that can last from a few days to even a few weeks .

Some people will stop the no poo method  after just a week or less, saying that it doesn’t work, but as I read it’s because their body hasn’t gotten used to this natural way of cleansing.

I washed my hair with baking soda and apple cider vinegar this morning and so far it looks and feels great but it’s only day 1.


Shampoo strips your hair of natural moisture, so your scalp may still be in oil-production overdrive for a little while until you adjust.

The breaking in period can be pretty gross so if you’ve got short hair, brush it regularly, this will help distribute the oils more evenly, so your hair won’t look so greasy . Brushing can help distribute the oil in long hair as well and you may want to wear your hair in a pony tail or bun until your hair adjusts.

How to do the no poo do:

Dissolve 1 tablespoon of baking soda in just enough water to make a paste.

Apply this to your roots only; work it in and let it sit for a minute.

To stimulate blood flow, clean your pores and get built up grime out of your hair, use your finger tips to scrub your scalp. Start by making a circle on the top of your head in the area you’d wear a crown. Focus on the back of this circle to begin with. Next, fill in the circle. This is where your part will be; grease here affects the way your hair looks. Trace while still scrubbing with your fingertips around the bottom edge of the circle. Keep making scrubbing circles underneath each one, drawing lines in circles around your head.

Lastly, scrub the back of your skull and your temples/sideburns. This will result in less grease and more growth. After doing this, your scalp will feel alive. Many women swear their hair grows faster after a visit to the salon — it does, and this massage method is why.

When scrubbing, you’re actually rubbing your fingers back and forth in short movements. Be gentle; you don’t want to break your hair.

Next, pour about 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into a cup and add water. (I keep two plastic 12-ounce cups in my shower and just mix when I get in.) After you rinse the baking soda out, pour the apple cider vinegar over the ends of your hair, let it sit for a minute and then rinse it out. That’s all there is to it!

Peach Fuzz

I have alot of European blood flowing through my veins much of it I believe must come from the Mediterranean (explains my love of red wine and good food!)   I have an olivey (is that even a word?)  complexion and a darkish (word?) thick full head of hair which is a curse most days especially with the humid summer we’ve had and with this curse and age comes the dreaded facial hair.  I have my eyebrows waxed usually once a month, which again with age are starting to grow up into my temples and forehead! (how do you like me so far???) I started going to a new place in a town near me and it’s run by a beautiful, petite asian woman with a very strong accent.   The last time I visited her she was preparing my eyebrows for the not so much-anticipated ripping of the facial hair.  She was looking at my face and said ” Ohhhh you have alota hair eh?, I can do your lip?” I politely said as my face is getting red and hot “oh no thankyou just my eyebrows” she continued with “Ohhhh  how bout your chin I can do your chin?”  I once again said “no thankyou” at this point any shred of dignity and femininity  had left me!   Once she was finished I paid her, with no tip this time,  and dragged my crushed self to the car, I still couldn’t help but laugh.   I have not been back to see her as my self-esteem could not take it.

Which brings me to why I decided to write this post, here it comes Deb a copied piece of info…:) I found some great information on this website

This is my personal uncopied note Deb calcium interferes with iron so this “concoction” is best taken with a non – dairy product like Rice Milk or in tea or hey just straight up or on toast!

Blackstrap molasses is known to help with facial hair, anxiety, anemia, arthritic pain, joint pain and acne .

Traditional Recipe

1 Tablespoon of Blackstrap Molasses, first thing in the morning.

Iced Molasses recipe:

1 Tablespoon Blackstrap Molasses

Hot Water

3/4 Cup Milk or Soymilk


Add molasses to a glass and add just enough hot water to cover the molasses.  Stir until dissolved.  Add ice  then top off with either Milk or Soymilk.  Try vanilla or chocolate soymilk. 

Another recipe is from someone in Micanopy Florida:

1 cup water

1 Lemon Ginger tea bag                                         

1 tsp molasses

1tsp honey                                                                                                                                            

Cover and let steep for 5 min.
