Long lines of anxious drinkers formed in liquor stores across Ontario today ahead of the Victoria Day long weekend as a midnight strike deadline for store workers looms.

Shoppers in Ontario looking to stock up on wine and spirits reported massive lines at Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) locations and shopping carts filled to the brim with more than a weekend’s worth of booze.

With the strike deadline nearing, the Ontario government is still hopeful there won’t be a walkout by LCBO employees. If it goes ahead, it will be the first strike to impact the LCBO in its 87-year history.

Why are they going on strike?

At issue are wages and benefits, job security, and health and safety standards. The union is also concerned about the treatment of part-time workers. Some workers have complained about the lack of opportunities for full-time employment

How long since the last strike?

There has never been a strike in the LCBO’s 86-year history. However, a walk-out was narrowly averted four years ago, boosting liquor sales to $56 million the day before workers were set to walk out—the largest in LCBO history.
